THE MYTH OF BENEFICENT NATURE - THE RISKS OF HERBAL PREPARATIONS

In light of the paper by Larrey and colleagues in this issue, some of the hazards associated with the consumption of herbs are discussed. Symptoms of intoxication may be delayed in appearance or occur only with long-term use of an herb. Problems arise because of misidentification of commercially sold herbs, variability in chemical constituents, or deliberate adulteration. Certain groups, including the very young and those taking prescription medications, have a higher risk for problems with herbs. Some common-sense guidelines for the use of herbs are suggested.
