SPIN QUENCHING AND ORBITAL ENHANCEMENT IN THE TI ISOTOPES

Exact shell model calculations with a minimally modified form of the Kuo-Brown interaction yield detailed quantitative agreement for spin and M1 strength functions measured in (p, p') and (e, e') scattering in Ti-46,48. The correlations in the exact results procedure strong spin quenching, orbital enhancement and surprising modifications of the orbital collective modes with respect to the McCullen, Bayman and Zamick model and its low order extensions. Intruder states show up conspicuously and are held responsible for the residual discrepancies between data and calculations.
