摘要
The effect of nitrogen, 0-1200 Torr, on ozone formation in the 214-nm photolysis of oxygen, 125-300 Torr, was investigated. Addition of nitrogen was found to enhance the rate of ozone generation. This observation can be rationalized in terms of the effect of nitrogen on oxygen absorbance in the Herzberg continuum. For the pressure dependence of oxygen absorption cross sections given by σO2 = σ0 + αPO2 + βPN2 , a β/α value of 0.49 ± 0.07 (2σ) is derived, indicating that the self-effect of oxygen pressure on its absorbance and photodissociation is considerably more pronounced than the effect of nitrogen. This result is utilized for the estimation of the combined pressure effect of nitrogen and oxygen pressure on the stratospheric absorption cross sections of oxygen. © 1990 American Chemical Society.
