Variations of the crystal structure, superconductivity, thermoelectric power and magnetic susceptibility with the iodine concentration x have been investigated for iodine-intercalated Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+deltaIx with 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1, using sintered samples of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+delta) with three different values of delta for the host samples. It has been concluded that the strange x dependence of T-c is mainly due to the x dependence of the hole concentration in the CuO2 sheets p, owing to charge transfer from iodine to the CuO2 sheets, and that the value of p has an upper limit in the Bi-2212 phase. The amount of holes transferred from iodine to the host material has been estimated as 0.18-0.35 per iodine, suggesting that iodine is intercalated predominantly in the form of I-3(-) molecules.
