GIEMSA BANDED KARYOTYPES, SYSTEMATICS, AND EVOLUTION IN ANACYCLUS (ASTERACEAE-ANTHEMIDEAE)

Giemsa C-banding allows the differentiation of 6, otherwise very similar karyotypes of the small genus Anacyclus [A. depressus, A. pyrethrum, A. radiatus, A. purpurascens, A. valentinus, A. clavatus, A. coronatus]. Banding characteristics, with stable centromeric and nucleolar bands, and diverse specific banding patterns in distal chromosome segments, contribute significantly to generic demarcation and systematic grouping. The amount of banding corresponds to heterochromatic chromocenters and increases from perennials to annuals. Relationships with other nucleotype parameters and evolutionary mechanisms are discussed.
