Based on the mechanism graph representation, a systematic algorithm is developed for the automatic synthesis of displacement graphs for planetary gear trains. First, the graph representation and fundamental rules of planetary gear trains are introduced. Next, we propose an algorithm for the automatic enumeration of the adjacency matrices of the graphs of N-link planetary gear trains from those of (N - 1)-link planetary gear trains. The structural codes of graphs is used as a mathematical tool to identify graph isomorphism. Finally, a computer program is developed for the automatic synthesis of nonisomorphic planetary gear trains. In this paper, an atlas of displacement graphs for one-DOF planetary gear trains with up to eight links has been constructed.
