E. Wolska and coworkers have reported that magnetite (Fe3O4) can form solid solutions with hercynite (FeAl2O4) only within the region of Fe3O4-Fe2.70Al0.30O4 and that for oxidized phases in cation deficient spinels, the limit of aluminum substitution in γ-(Fe1-yAly)2O3 was about y = 0.10. This differs from the authors results which have established that the substitution of Fe3+ by Al3+ in Fe3-xAlxO4 is possible up to x = 2 and in γ-(Fe1-yAly)2O3 up to y = 0.66. In view of this they the synthesis of aluminum substituted magnetities via a metal-organic precursor method, present measurements of the lattice parameter and infrared investigations of Al-magnetites and Al-maghemites and discuss the differences observed in terms of limits of Al substitution.
