Cd(S,Se)-doped glasses were heated at various temperatures and times and were examined by high resolution electron microscopy, in order to study the formation and growth of Cd(S,Se) nanocrystals responsible for the optical properties. At 600-degrees-C, the growth was found to be very slow: after 8 days of heat treatment, the nanocrystal sizes ranged between 2 and 8 nm with an average value S(a) almost-equal-to 4 nm. The growth rate increased with increasing temperature. At constant time (t = 2 days), crystallites with average sizes around 6 nm, 15 nm and 25 nm were found respectively for heating temperatures close to 630-degrees-C, 690-degrees-C and 750-degrees-C. This range of temperature is the most favourable for future studies of the growth kinetics.
