INTERMITTENT FLOW BEHAVIOR OF RANDOM FOAMS - A COMPUTER EXPERIMENT ON FOAM RHEOLOGY

A computer experiment on foam rheology is performed with a simplified model in which the viscous dissipation in the liquid phase is taken into account. The simulation is carried out under the sheared boundary condition with a small shear rate. It is observed that violent flow like that of an avalanche occurs intermittently in the large strain regime. The distribution of energy released during avalanches and the power spectrum of the time series of energy exhibit power-law behavior. These results imply that the foam flow is understood as a self-organized critical phenomenon. © 1995 The American Physical Society.
