Cis-(pyH) [MoCl(4)py2] was prepared from (pyH)(3)[MoCl6] and pyridine in acetonitrile at room temperature. Several cis- and trans-M(I)[MoCl(4)py(2)] complexes were pre pared from cis- and trans-(pyH)[MoCl(4)py(2)]. Cis-M(I)[MoCl(4)py(2)] isomerizes in solution above room temperature to trans-M(I)[MoCl(4)py(2)]. Both isomers are oxidized by bromine to trans-MoCl(4)py(2). IR spectra can, in a qualitative way, distinguish between cis and trans isomers. The crystal-structure of cis-Rb[MoCl(4)py(2)].H2O was determined in order to obtain definite evidence for the existence of cis isomers.
