EFFECT OF CALCIUM ON THE ZINC UPTAKE BY BRUSH-BORDER MEMBRANE-VESICLES ISOLATED FROM THE RAT SMALL-INTESTINE

To assess the nutritional defects of some trace elements caused by an excess supplementation of calcium, an in vitro study was undertaken on brush border membrane vesicles (BBMV) isolated from the small intestinal mucosa of normal rats. The uptake of Zn-65(2+) tended to be saturable with increasing concentration of Zn2+, which was decreased by adding an excess concentration of IIa cations or of Mn2+. The degree of inhibition was inversely proportional to the ionic radius of these divalent cations, except for manganese. All of these inhibition processes proceeded without change in the maximum velocity of Zn2+ uptake, indicating the intervention by a common carrier for these cations during the course of mucosal uptake.
