The gas phase reaction between elemental mercury (Hg-o) and ozone (O-3) has been studied in sunlight, in darkness, at different temperatures, and different surface-to-volume (s/v) ratios. At O-3 concentrations above 20 ppm, a loss of Hg-o and a simultaneous formation of oxidized mercury (Hg(II)) was observed. The results suggest a partly heterogeneous reaction, with a gas phase rate constant of 3 +/- 2 x 10(-20) cm(3) molec.(-1) s(-1) at 20 degrees C. This corresponds to an atmospheric Hg half-life of about one year at a mean global O-3 concentration of 30 ppb.
