GRAVURE ROLL COATING OF NEWTONIAN LIQUIDS

An experimental investigation of the flexible blade/gravure roll coating operation is presented for a wide range of operating conditions. The film thickness is measured with an infrared guage and the data reveal two regions of constant film thickness. At low capillary number (Ca < 0.3), the film thickness increases with increasing roller roughness defined as cell volume per unit area. At capillary number > 7.0, the film thickness is essentially independent of roughness. In all cases a decrease is observed with increasing slot gap. This, a priori, unexpected result is explained with reference to the flow beneath the blade which is circulatory at large gaps and linear at low gaps.
