LASER-INDUCED-FLUORESCENCE SPECTROSCOPY OF THE JET-COOLED DIMER OF N-ETHYLCARBAZOLE

A laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) investigation of the jet-cooled dimer of the aromatic molecule N-ethylcarbazole is presented. The dimer behaves essentially as a perturbed monomer. The origin is shifted bathochromically some 606.8 cm-1 relative to that of the monomer, and this can be explained in terms of enhanced dipole-dipole attractions upon excitation. Intermolecular bending and stretching vibrations were active in the spectra implying a contraction of an intermolecular coordinate upon excitation. There was no evidence for any excimeric behaviour, in contrast to observations on the related molecule 9-ethylfluorene.
