SINGLE-CRYSTALS OF A NEW PYROCHLORE-TYPE PHASE, TIYO2.1 WITH DEFECTS

摘要
Single crystals of a subvalent oxide of composition YTiO2.1 have been prepared by CO2 laser heating above 2800-degrees-C. It crystallizes with cubic symmetry, space group O(h)7-Fd3mBAR, a = 10.1811 angstrom, Z = 16. YTiO2.1 belongs to the pyrochlore-type compounds. The two oxygen positions are strongly underoccupied. Calculations of the Coulomb terms of lattice energy show significant evidence of Ti3+ rather than Ti2+ and of Y3+ rather than Y2+.
