INTERPRETATION OF A DOUBLE HYPERNUCLEUS EVENT

Arguments are put forward to suggest that a double hypernucleus event, recently reported by Aoki et al. as either Be-10-LAMBDA-LAMBDA or B-13-LAMBDA-LAMBDA, should be interpreted as B-13-LAMBDA-LAMBDA. It is proposed that the formation of B-13-LAMBDA-LAMBDA occurs sequentially via an intermediate excited state of C-14-LAMBDA-LAMBDA, which decays by proton emission: XI- + N-14 --> n + C-14-LAMBDA-LAMBDA*, C-14-LAMBDA-LAMBDA* --> p + B-13-LAMBDA-LAMBDA. Moreover, it is shown that particular excited states are favored in the XI- hyperon capture process. The binding energy of the two LAMBDA hyperons in B-13-LAMBDA-LAMBDA is B-LAMBDA-LAMBDA = 27.5 + 0.7 MeV, corresponding to an attractive S-LAMBDA-2 matrix element DELTA-B-LAMBDA-LAMBDA = 4.8 +/- 0.7 MeV, in good agreement with values of DELTA-B-LAMBDA-LAMBDA obtained from previous events.
