PREDICTION OF THE SOLUBILITY OF POLAR POLYMERS BY MEANS OF INTERFACIAL-TENSION COMBINING RULES

摘要
It can be shown that the polar component of the surface tension must comprise two parameters: an electron-acceptor and an electron-donor parameter. If only one, indivisible polar surface tension component, e.g., ''gamma(P)'', is assumed to exist, it becomes impossible for the polar component of the interfacial tension to attain a negative value, which concomitantly makes it impossible for net interfacial repulsions to occur in polar systems. This in turn would give rise to the total insolubility in water of polymers which are known to be water soluble and to the impossibility of the occurrence of a large number of other surface and colloid phenomena which are nevertheless known to take place in aqueous and other polar systems.
