摘要
Drop-tube processing in inert gas is used to study grain refinement in highly undercooled melts. The high cooling rate in fine droplets can give rise to grain-refined but directional microstructures. The general recrystallization associated with "spherical" solidification morphologies may be prevented by a sufficiently high post-solidification cooling rate. The diameter of the spherical elements can be related to calculated local solidification times.
