摘要
Monodisperse oil droplets in water (oil-in-water emulsion) are used to study the stability of the aqueous thin films separating close contact droplets. By use of an osmotic stress technique, the emulsions can be compressed by squeezing the water out. The emulsion stability can be related to one microscopic property of the thin films: its disjoining pressure. This technique leads to a very easy measurement of the critical disjoining pressure for rupture of the thin film and thus allows a quantitative characterization of the behavior of an emulsion in terms of thin films stability.
