Thermolysis and neutral aquathermolysis of ring and N-substituted anilines showed either no reaction or little conversion. In phosphoric acid (10%) the anilines underwent denitrogenation to give phenols. Friedel-Crafts type alkylations and dealkylations were observed for alkyl-substituted anilines, together with the formation of diarylamines and carbazoles, both in runs with phosphoric acid and in runs with an aqueous sulfite/bisulfite mixture. Mechanistic pathways are suggested for the formation of all products. © 1990, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
