SINGLE-ELECTRON TRANSFER FROM 1,1-BIS(P-DIMETHYLAMINOPHENYL)ETHYLENE TO SINGLET OXYGEN IN A POLAR APROTIC-SOLVENT

摘要
Evidence is presented that singlet oxygen (1O2, 1-DELTA-g) oxidizes 1,1-bis(p-dimethylaminophenyl)ethylene (1a) in acetonitrile by a single-electron transfer (SET) process to radical cation 1a.+. In spite of the inefficient endergonic SET, appreciable amounts of 3,3,6,6-tetrakis(p-dimethylaminophenyl)-1,2-dioxane (2a) are formed in oxygen-saturated solutions, due to a rather efficient chain reaction involving 1a.+, 1a and triplet oxygen (3O2).
