摘要
N‐Methylation of 2‐phenylbenzimidazole, 2‐phenylindole and three 3,2′‐methylene‐bridged 2‐phenylindoles gives rise to significant changes in the chemical shifts of the protons close to the phenyl‐‐‐heterocycle bond. The observed upfield and downfield shifts are accounted for by deviation from a planar conformation in the non‐rigid molecules and by intramolecular compression effects in the more rigid molecules, respectively.
