This paper reports NMR investigations of the structure of a new system of glasses based on B2S 3. Such glasses have only recently been fabricated and little is known about their physical properties. Even less is known about their structure although it is generally assumed to be similar to that of the analogous oxide glass. The NMR data reported here show that this assumption is not entirely justified. Glassy B2S 3 has been studied by NMR as early as 1975 by Hendrickson and Bishop [1]. Further structural investigations utilizing NMR and Raman spectroscopies have been made by Rubinstein [2]a nd Geissberger [3]. Some new results on g-B2S 3 will be presented in this paper. Recently interest in B2S3-based glasses has been stimulated by the possibility of producing Fast Ion Conducting (FIC) glasses in this system. Alkali-halo-borate glasses have been shown to be good FIC glasses [4; and it has been suggested that a replacement of oxygen with sulfur may increase ionic conductivity. This has been demonstrated by Wada et al. in Li2S-LiI-B2S 3 [5] and Susman in Na2S-B2S 3 glasses [6]. Wada has shown that conductivity increases with increasing size of the halogen ion; an effect also observed in similar oxide glasses. He has obtained conductivities of about 10-3 12-1 cm-1 at 25°C. Although high conductivity is obtainable; it is questionable whether * This work was supported by Brown University's Materials Research Laboratory funded by the National Science Foundation;
