HREELS AND ARUPS INVESTIGATION OF THE COADSORPTION OF CO AND K ON CU(111)

摘要
The CO + K/Cu(111) system at potassium precoverages below 0.18 has been investigated using HREELS and ARUPS. Two molecular adsorption states of CO were found at low temperature. One with lower C-O stretch frequency, named alpha-1, has a stronger interaction between the adsorbed CO molecule and coadsorbed K, while the other with higher C-O stretch frequency, named alpha-2, has a weaker interaction. The alpha-1 and alpha-2 states are occupied sequentially during the exposure to CO. At room temperature, only the alpha-1 state was found. The low 4-sigma/(5-sigma + 1-pi) intensity ratio suggests that the alpha-1-CO molecules do not stand upright.
