RAPID FORMATION OF YBA2CU3O7-X UNDER PARTIAL VACUUM AND VIA A 2-STEP PROCEDURE

The formation of YBa2Cu3O7-x from BaCuO2, Y2O3 and CuO is investigated under various partial pressures of oxygen, temperatures and reaction times. Instead of the usual source of barium, namely BaCO3, BaCuO2 is employed. In this manner the effect of the slow carbonate decomposition on the rate of the process is eliminated and the effect of other factors can be investigated. Heating the system at 850-degrees-C, for 2.5 h and under a pressure of oxygen ranging from 2 to 760 Torr, it was found that the rate of formation of YBa2Cu3O7-x is enhanced at lower pressures. This enhancement is believed to be a result of higher ionic diffusion at lower pressures, caused by an increased number of oxygen vacancies and by an expanded unit cell in the lattices of YBa2Cu3O7-x and of the other oxides involved. Too low a pressure of oxygen, however, impedes the formation of the YBa2Cu3O7-x compound.
