Metal-mediated interactions, dominant in a moderately strong chemisorbed system like CO/Ru(001), cause changes of lateral interactions not only as a function of distance between adsorbed particles but also as a function of coverage and introduce ordering mechanisms different from those observed for noble gas adsorbates. Results of a detailed LEED study are presented, carried out by photographical and by spot profile analysis. Coverage induced structural changes up to saturation coverage as well as of the order disorder transitions as a function of temperature at fixed coverage are discussed and structural models and a phase diagram are given.
