A fantastic vision of the work of combustion and safety engineers some years from now leads into a Sophoclean debate about the shortcomings of current and future research in turbulent combustion. The objectives of future research in turbulence theory and modeling, turbulent combustion modeling, direct numerical simulation and application of advanced laser diagnostics are discussed. A plea is made for making more efficient and coordinated use of the limited resources that are available.
