Professional phagocytes such as neutrophils play a major role in host defence against bacterial and fungal pathogens. Many of the proteins involved in microbial recognition and destruction have been characterized, but how they are activated during inflammation is unclear. A recent Workshop* addressed some of the unsolved problems of neutrophil function.
