HYDRATION EFFECTS ON THE NUCLEAR-RELAXATION PROPERTIES OF POLYANILINE

Proton spin lattice relaxation time (T1) has been measured in the frequency range 7-100 MHz as a function of hydration, in polyaniline samples in which different types of protons were selectively replaced by deuterons. Large effects are observed for T1(-1) upon hydration but it appears that the quasi 1-D diffusion of the electronic spins remains the leading source of relaxation. The analysis of the data provides the first direct evidence of an hydration effect on the pi-electron spin system of polyaniline. With additional ESR data (T2e) it is concluded that this effect mainly concerns the static aspects (shape of the electronic wave functions, delocalization) while the on-chain spin dynamics is unchanged.
