The effects of free volume on the thermal and mechanical properties of epoxies from diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and ethylene diamine (EDA) were investigated. The degree of free volume was controlled by the different thermal history. For fully cured epoxy systems, the density and modulus of both aged and quenched specimens decreased with increasing EDA concentration. However the yield stress of quenched specimens showed a maximum at about equal stoichiometric formulation, while that of aged ones decreased with increasing EDA concentration.
