Water transfer across a liquid membrane occurs during the process of the liquid membrane technique. This leads to swelling of the emulsion so that the solutes (for example, phenol and metal ions) are diluted, rendering the recycling of those substances more difficult. Osmosis can be described as a function of many parameters. For prognosis it is important to propound a mathematical model for the transport of water across a liquid membrane. Experimental results show that the main influencing parameters are concentration of interfacial active agents, pH, temperature and difference in ionic strength of the feed and the receiving phase. A proposal for modelling osmosis in liquid membrane technology is given.
