摘要
An extensive investigation has been made of the formation of white layers on abrasively worn digger teeth. A wide range of microstructural and microanalytical techniques have been used in association with measurements of microhardness. It has been established that there is no chemical change associated with the white layer; rather that an explanation involves the production of an extremely fine-grained martensite (essentially this is a ''thermomechanically transformed white layer'').
