ANATOMY OF VIVIPAROUS SEAGRASSES SEEDLINGS OF AMPHIBOLIS AND THALASSODENDRON AND THEIR NUTRIENT SUPPLY

Amphibolis and Thalassodendron, members of the family Cymodoceaceae, are the only seagrasses having viviparous seedlings. They develop a footing tissue probably derived from the hypocotyl, which is used to attach the seedling to the parent plant. Cells with wall ingrowths (transfer cells) are found in the outermost layers of the footing tissue of the seagrasses Amphibolis griffithii (Black) den Hartog, Amphibolis antarctica (Labill.) Sonder ex Aschers. and Thalassodendron pachyrhizum den Hartog. These strategically important transfer cells are probably involved in the process of transferring nutrient from the maternal tissues to the germinating seeds.
