THE PHASE-RELATIONS IN THE IN2O3-AL2ZNO4-ZNO SYSTEM AT 1350-DEGREES-C

Phase relations in the In2O3-Al2ZnO4-ZnO system at 1350°C are determined by a classical quenching method. This system consists of In2O3, Al2ZnO4, ZnO, and homologous phases InAlO3(ZnO)m (m = 2, 3, …) having solid solutions with LuFeO3(ZnO)m-type crystal structures. These solid solution ranges are as follows: In1+xAl1-xO3(Zn O)2 (x1 = 0.70)-In1+xAl1-xO3(ZnO)2 (x2 = 0.316-0.320), In2O3(ZnO)3-In1+xAl1-xO3(ZnO)3 (x = 0.230), In2O3(ZnO)4-In1+xAl1-xO3(ZnO)4 (x = 0.15-0.16), In2O3(ZnO)5-In1+xAl1-xO3(ZnO)5 (x = 0.116-0.130), In2O3(ZnO)6-In1+xAl1-xO3(ZnO)6 (x = 0.000-0.111), In2O3(ZnO)7-In1+xAl1-xO3(ZnO)7 (x = 0.08), In2O3(ZnO)8-In1+xAl1-xO3(ZnO)8 (x: undetermined), and In2O3(ZnO)m-InAlO3(ZnO)m (m = 9, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 19). The space groups of these homologous phases belong to R3̄m for m = odd or P63/mmc for m = even. Their crystal structures, In1+xAl1-xO3(ZnO)m (0 < x < 1), consist of three kinds of layers: an InO1.5 layer, an (InxAl1-xZn)O2.5 layer, and ZnO layers. A comparison of the phase relations in the In2O3-M2ZnO4-ZnO systems (M = Fe, Ga, or Al) is made and their characteristic features are discussed in terms of the ionic radii and site preferences of the M cations. © 1993 Academic Press, Inc.
