COMPARISON OF SURFACE-PROPERTIES AND THERMODYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF LYSOPHOSPHATIDYLCHOLINES AND DIACYLPHOSPHATIDYLCHOLINES

Critical micelle concentrations as a function of temperature have been determined by surface tension for a series of diacylphosphatidylcholines and lysophosphatidylcholines with the same total number of fatty acyl carbons. From these studies, thermodynamic functions (ΔGmic, ΔGads) and various interfacial parameters (surface areas and pressures) are derived and used to compare the double- and single-chain species. Key conclusions are that (i) micellization is more dependent on hydrophobic interactions than adsorption, (ii) four carbons contribute to the micellization process but do not contribute to adsorption and this can be related to hydration of the lipids, and (iii) chain length limits can be set on which lipids no longer form micelles or adsorb to the air/water interface. © 1992.
