MASSES OF THE HIGGS BOSON AND THE TOP QUARK IN THE STANDARD MODEL FROM ABSENCE OF DIVERGENCES

By purely theoretical arguments involving the absence of certain divergences in the standard model, the masses of the Higgs and the top quark have been found to be related to those of the W and the Z by m(H)2 = 9m(Z)2 - 6m(W)2, m(t)2 = 5/2m(Z)2 - m(W)2, where terms of order m(b)2 have been neglected. The numerical values are m(H) = 190 GeV and m(t) = 120 GeV. This value of m(t) is within the range favored by existing phenomenology. The Higgs of this mass has a width of 1 GeV, with the major branching ratios of 77%, 22% and 1% into W+W-, ZZ and bbBAR, and is quite easy to detect at SSC and LHC even without enhanced luminosity.
