Electric-field orientation of poly(phenylmethylsilane) (PPMS) and poly(cyclohexylmethylsilane) (PHMS) in solvent has been observed. This phenomenon can be explained in terms of the birefringence of polysilanes. PPMS and PHMS align perpendicular to and parallel to the electric field, respectively, but do not align along the grooves on the polyimide film. Electrically oriented films of PHMS are also demonstrated.
