摘要：

Functional mapping of the human motor cortex related to the hand and foot area was obtainedby focal magnetic stimulation of the brain. The basicidea of localized brain stimulation is to concentrateinduced eddy currents locally in the vicinity of atarget by a pair of opposing pulsed magnetic fields.A figure-eight coil was designed, and the coil waspositioned outside the head so that time-varyingmagnetic fields pass through the head in oppositedirections around a target. It was observed that anoptimum direction of stimulating currents for neuralexcitation exists in each functional area in thecortex. The functional maps of the brain weresensitive to change in the direction of thestimulating currents. The experimental resultssuggest that the direction of current vectors forneural excitation in magnetic brain stimulationreflects both anatomical and functional organizationof neural fibers in the brain. © 1990 IEEE
