AN EMPIRICAL GENERALIZED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CHANGE IN AUGER PARAMETERS AND THE REFRACTIVE-INDEXES OF OPTICAL DIELECTRIC MATERIALS

The Auger parameter as proposed by Wagner is the difference between the kinetic energy of the sharpest Auger peak in the spectrum and the kinetic energy of the most intense photoelectron peak from the same element. The change in Auger parameter is the difference between the Auger parameters of the parent element and the same element in a compound material. In this paper a linear relationship is shown to exist empirically between the change in Auger parameters and refractive indices of a wide range of optical dielectric materials. It is also found that the change in Auger parameter with respect to any element in a multielemental compound is nearly the same, indicating the validity of the linear relation stated above. The discrepancies are explained as due to the differences in the accuracy of measurements for photoelectron and Auger electron line energies, the latter being less accurate at higher kinetic energies, owing to line broadening.
