EXCITED-STATE ABSORPTION (ESA) OF MN IN ZNS AND ZNSE

By pumping the first excited state 4T1(4G) of Mn by an Ar+ laser, we performed ESA experiments to obtain more information about Mn levels in ZnS and ZnSe that are masked by intrinsic band-gap transitions in ground state absorption. Our experiments extend already known results for Zn1-xMnxS. The dependence on concentration and temperature as well as the direct time response were measured. For Zn1-xMnxSe, Mn-correlated ESA signals have probably been observed in one sample. Results for the two materials are compared. For the higher excited states, adequate level assignments by the usual or modified versions of crystal field theory were not possible. For Zn1-xMnxS, further evidence was found that an ESA-photoionization transition, either to the conduction or from the valence band, can be observed. © 1989.
