We synthesized 1,11,12,13,14-pentahydroxymethylpentacene and its tetrabutylammonium salt and studied these compounds by FTIR spectroscopy in CH2Cl2 solution. The alcohol is partially associated in this solution. The tetrabutylammonium salt causes an intense continuum which begins at about 3000 cm-1 and extends down to 150 cm-1, indicating the large proton polarizability of the hydrogen-bonded chain due to collective proton motion.
