PREPARATION OF COLLOIDAL MAGNESIUM ALUMINUM-SILICATES BY HYDROLYSIS OF A MIXED ALKOXIDE

Hydrolysis of a mixed magnesium-aluminum-silicate ethoxide of a fixed composition was used to prepare finely dispersed particles. In one procedure, the precipitation of the solid phase was carried out by the addition of aqueous acid or base solutions to the liquid alkoxide. Depending on the experimental conditions, cordierite was obtained, pure or mixed with either forsterite or a spinel phase. In another technique the alkoxide was nebulized and the droplets exposed to water vapor. This aerosol technique produced, very rapidly, spherical solid particles, the composition of which turned out to be a mixture of different phases. © 1990.
