LOW-ENERGY ION-SCATTERING STUDY OF THE CU(110)(2X3)-N STRUCTURE

The structure of the Cu(110)(2 × 3)-N structure has been investigated using the scattering of 3 keV Li+ and 2 keV He+ ions with a scattering angle of 150°. Li+→ Cu scattering shows clear evidence for substantial reconstruction of the substrate with an apparent reduction of the Cu-Cu spacing in the 〈100〉 azimuth but lengthening of the periodicity in 〈211〉. He+ → N scattering shows the N atoms visible in all the principal azimuths to grazing incidence favouring a N adsorption site above the surface. Many of the observations are found to be both qualitatively and quantitatively consistent with a reconstruction model in which a local Cu(110)(2 × 2)-N structure is formed on the Cu(110) substrate.
