摘要
Fire retardance of polypropylene by a mixture of the additives diammonium pyrophosphate and pentaerythritol is due to the formation of protective coatings: a swollen char (intumescence) at temperatures lower than 350°C and a carbonaceous 'residue' at higher temperatures. 31P and 13C MASNMR and ESR spectroscopic studies show that these coatings are frameworks of carbon which always support acidic phosphate species and, when intumescence occurs, small amounts of hydrocarbon(s). A mechanism is proposed for the formation of these coatings: they form via the decomposition of esters which result either from a reaction between the additives or from a reaction between the acidic phosphate species (formed during the preceding reaction) and the products which result from the thermo-oxidative degradation of the polymer. © 1990.
