We propose an interpretation of light ion beam irradiation experiments on YBa2Cu3O7 - δ films. We analyze the intragranular effects which are due to intrinsic properties of these superconductors. A depairing analysis of the irradiation-induced reduction in the corresponding superconducting (onset) transition temperature Tc accounts for the experimental results. Comparison with thermal desorption results leads us to conclude that depairing in YBa2Cu3O7 - δ is essentially due to the removal of oxygen from the Cu-O chains. © 1990.
