摘要
A quantitative study of optical properties of a photoreceptor requires a knowledge of its characteristic waveguide parameter V. Previously, neither a direct measurement of V nor its accurate determination has been possible. V was determined in almost intact fly [Musca, white-eye mutant] photoreceptors by measuring their birefringence. The smaller fly photoreceptors have pronounced waveguide effects for wavelengths greater than 400 nm.
