IMPORTANCE OF OXYGEN-SURFACE GROUPS IN CATALYTIC DEHYDRATION AND DEHYDROGENATION OF BUTAN-2-OL PROMOTED BY CARBON CATALYSTS

摘要
A series of carbons of different surface chemical nature has been prepared from poly(furfuryl alcohol), and the catalytic activity was tested for dehydration and dehydrogenation of butan-2-ol in the temperature range of 418 to 448 K. The products are the cis and trans isomers of butene-2 and methylethyl ketone (MEK), respectively. It was found that the dehydration activity results from the presence of carboxyl groups of varying acid strength, whereas the dehydrogenation activity results from the simultaneous presence of Lewis acid and Lewis base sites. Introduction of Zn2+ or Ni2+ ions enhances the dehydrogenation activity and selectivity. For all catalytically active carbons, an increase of temperature decreases the selectivity for the ketone.
