DAMAGE RESISTANCE OF GRAPHITE EPOXY SANDWICH PANELS UNDER LOW-SPEED IMPACTS

Static indentation tests and impact tests were done on sandwich panels made of AS4/3501-6 graphite/epoxy facesheets in a [+/- 45/0]s layup and Rohacell core of three thicknesses (3.18 mm, 6.35 mm, and 12.7 mm). The sandwich panels, measured 279.4 mm x 279.4 mm, were impacted with an impactor of mass 1.53 kg and of nose diameter 12.7 mm at velocities ranging from 0.8 m/s to 3.5 m/s. The experimentally measured force-time history compares favorably with that predicted by a theoretical model based on an assumed modes method. The static indentation tests were used to find the contact stiffness of the sandwich panels which is required by the theoretical model.
