THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MAGNETIZATION AND HYSTERESIS OF CRITICAL CURRENT IN SINTERED YBCO

Measurements are reported of transport critical current and magnetisation on the same samples of YBCO for three different orientations with respect to applied magnetic field. The predictions made by the model of Evetts and Glowacki [1] for the hysteresis observed in J(c) were investigated and found to be in qualitative agreement with the results. However, attempts to relate the hysteresis to the magnetisation by assuming that J(c) is a unique function of the internal field H = H-0 - nM were unsuccessful. The value of n is found to be much larger than any demagnetising factor and varies widely with both field and geometry.
