CATALYTIC-OXIDATION OF CHLOROACETONITRILE OVER A 1-PERCENT PLATINUM ALUMINA CATALYST

The complete catalytic oxidation of chloroacetonitrile over a 1% Pt/Al2O3 catalyst was investigated using a fixed bed reactor at temperatures between 275 and 400-degrees-C, atmospheric pressure, and concentrations ranging from 250 to 10 000 ppm (v/v) in humid air. A kinetic rate expression was developed to describe the data over the range of conditions investigated. The rate expression included terms for inhibition due to both the reactant chloroacetonitrile and acid gas reaction product. The rate expression was then evaluated for its ability to predict low effluent concentrations from high challenge concentrations.
